Fluffy boots for the coldest days of the year

Faux fur and shearling boots in cream, white, brown and black, from shaggy tall styles and lace up snow boots to cozy ankle booties and platform minis, plus how to wear them without looking like you are headed to a ski lodge.

Why fluffy boots are back

Cold feet ruin a good outfit fast. Fluffy boots fix that, and this year they look playful rather than practical.

Think shaggy faux fur that goes up the calf, warm lined minis that slip on in a second, and lace up styles that look straight out of a winter cabin.

I split the edit into two groups: faux fur boots first, then shearling and sheepskin boots.

Faux fur boots

These are the fun ones. The white lace up snow boot and the cream teddy bootie feel light and bright, while the shaggy tall boot in caramel is the boldest pair here.

The cuffed booties are easier to wear every day, with just a band of fluff at the top. The slouchy tall brown style on a block heel is the dressiest option, and the platform bootie with a strap adds a little height.

My fitting room test: rub the fur between your fingers. It should feel soft and dense, not thin or scratchy. What I would skip: fur so long it drags on wet sidewalks.

Shearling and sheepskin boots

These are the warmest pairs and the ones you will reach for on the coldest mornings. The ultra mini styles in chocolate and bronze are the easiest to slip on, and the curly lace up boot feels like a winter classic.

The stitched suede boot with a wool lining looks great with cropped jeans, the black platform bootie with a fluffy collar is the most polished, and the tall cream lace up style is made for snowy weekends.

What I check: the lining. Real shearling should feel thick all the way down to the toe. What I would skip: pale suede on a pair you plan to wear in slush.

How I would wear fluffy boots this winter

Wear a shearling mini with straight leg jeans tucked in or cuffed above the boot, plus a long puffer coat. Faux fur tall boots look best with a short skirt or slim leggings and a cropped jacket so the boot stays the star.

Keep the rest of the outfit simple. One fluffy piece is plenty.
