The paisley print edit is a five-part case for a long dress line, a thoughtful neckline, one strong trouser, scarf styling, and lighter layers. I like a print that can be decorative without taking the whole room hostage.

The Paisley Print Edit: Five Lessons in Keeping the Pattern Playful
A print with its own opinion
There are prints I notice, and then there is a paisley print that gets approximately four seconds to rearrange an outfit in my head. I am checking the scale, the neckline, and whether it wants a scarf or an entire dress. I have no shame about this.
But somewhere between a borrowed shawl, a bohemian scarf, and a very assertive maxi dress, paisley has gotten a little complicated. We are told to make a print the whole personality and also to keep everything quiet. A curled leaf should not have this much emotional labor. That is my dry verdict.
Which brings me to 1812, when Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted the Countess of Tournon with a Kashmir shawl, in a portrait documented in the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection. It is a useful reminder that the textile has a history bigger than its English name. The name paisley came from the Scottish town whose makers became known for imitating Kashmir shawls.
The current moment is not just my own pattern fixation: Phia shopper data shows paisley interest rose 41% in the last 7 days vs the week before, the fastest climb of any print that week. Some of this print makes me want to wear a long line, some to keep it near the face, and some to tie a scarf twice and call it a plan. So here are five lessons: let a dress set its own pace, let a neckline edit, give trousers one direction, make the scarf punctuation, and let layers leave room for the motif.

1. Let the long line calm the print.
I am easily convinced that a full paisley dress needs no styling, only a plan for where I am going. The V&A records that shawls in the 1850s were large because they were worn over wide crinoline skirts, so this motif has always had a relationship with silhouette. I like the long line as a way to let the pattern unfold rather than chop it into pieces.
Hello Molly's Paisley Maxi Dress Purple is lilac chiffon with a tiered ruffle skirt and an open back, so I would keep shoes simple and let the tie straps finish the thought. 12th Tribe's Sundance Floral Paisley Maxi Dress brings green, rust, orange, and gold lurex onto a tiered skirt. Free People's Paisley Petals Maxi Dress adds long sleeves and an asymmetric hem, while Nigel Preston's Paisley Patch Maxi Dress alternates mauve panels of contrasting motifs.
Veronica Beard's Clem Dress puts blue floral paisley into a smocked cotton and silk bodice, while Halston's A-Line Midi Dress uses navy, ruching, and a pleated skirt. That is six distinct ways to give the eye one long path through a print.
I would check the neckline and hem together before adding jewelry, then choose only one extra detail. What I would skip: a thick belt, a large necklace, and printed shoes all competing with a tiered skirt. Although a long dress can do the work of three separate decisions.

2. Let the neckline choose the volume.
A neckline is my quickest way to decide how much pattern belongs near the face. Cooper Hewitt notes that the droplet form is called boteh, meaning “shrub,” in Persian and buta in the Indian subcontinent. The paisley print has a small, curling shape, so I like giving that movement a clean frame.
The Alba Paisley Lurex Long Sleeve Blouse by 12th Tribe has a plunge ruffle neckline and a tie front, which already supplies a point of focus. The Paisley Long Sleeve Top by Free People is an oversized cotton crewneck with a bandana style motif. The Miaou Ellie Top keeps the pattern close in a fitted burgundy cami, while the THE ATTICO Paisley Blouse lets blue and white do the talking in fluid viscose jersey.
Cinq à Sept has the Paisley Fan Solange Top in cranberry satin with black fan shapes and short puff sleeves. Madewell has the Smocked Square Neck Tank in navy jersey with cream motifs, and Veronica Beard's Ashlynn Silk Blouse makes the idea sheer in silk georgette. I would leave one button open or tuck the hem into a plain trouser, depending on how much print I want in the mirror.
What I would skip: a competing necklace when lurex, ruffles, or a scarf tie already frame the collar. Although a quiet neckline can still have a lot to say.

3. Give the print one strong direction.
Phia shopper data shows paisley interest rose 7% over 30 days while florals fell 28%. I like that contrast as a nudge to choose one strong shape, then let the rest of the outfit take a breath.
The L'AGENCE Livvy Beltloop Pant is dark navy Tencel in a fluid wide leg, an easy way to keep a busy motif in one column. Scarlett Poppies' Tibet Paisley Trouser uses papyrus chiffon, green print, and sequin details. ALEXIS has the Triest Pants in yellow satin with multicolor panels, while Bananhot has the Tommy Pants in sheer cream and lilac with a relaxed flare.
The Zimmermann Luna Track Pant keeps the print in caramel silk with a drawstring waist. The THE ATTICO Paisley Long Pant pairs blue and white with a wide leg, and MISA's Aggie Skirt moves the motif into a softly flared white and green midi. The Zimmermann Silk Aster Scarf Midi Skirt mixes blue, peach, and cream with front wrap slits.
My little test is to pick one color from the print and repeat it in a plain top, then stop there. A wide leg or a swishy skirt already gives the pattern movement. Although the quietest companion piece is often the one doing the best work.
4. A scarf is punctuation, not a footnote.
For scarf styling, I like the small decision with the big return. The V&A's 1851 to 1855 Paisley shawl could show either a red or white corner when folded over, giving the impression of two different shawls. One accessory, two readings, and no need to change the whole sentence.
Lele Sadoughi's Paisley Square Scarf sets an ivory satin square against a vivid border. Quince's 100% Silk Printed Square Scarf uses copper and cream on navy, while its 100% Silk Printed Skinny Scarf turns the same idea into a narrow strip. Lauren Ralph Lauren's Paisley Silk Square Scarf is dark green; the Paisley Silk Skinny Scarf is navy with burgundy, olive, and rust.
Echo's Parlor Paisley Square gives the motif a crisp dark border on woven silk. Lost Pattern's Paisley Silk Twill Skinny Scarf is double sided, and Jessie Zhao New York's Terra Paisley Double Sided Silk Scarf finishes its square with hand rolled edges. I would try the square at the neck, then on a bag handle, and keep whichever placement makes the outfit feel most like itself.
The two color trick is still a useful styling thought: show one corner, not every corner. A plain coat or tee makes a small paisley accessory feel deliberate. Although a scarf tied once is already a complete idea.

5. Let the outer layer leave room.
The craft behind the pattern is a reason to look twice. Cooper Hewitt describes Kashmiri kani as handwoven on a draw loom; with three weavers, a simple shawl could take three months and a complicated one more than a year. The word paisley arrived through a different history, as Scottish makers imitated Kashmir shawls and came to dominate that market by the 1820s.
Etro's Floral Paisley Silk and Cashmere Cardigan layers a blue based motif with flowers. Steve Madden's Dove Cropped Corduroy Paisley Jacket puts its pattern into flocked jacquard, while Sanctuary's Empress Quilted Paisley Bomber uses a cocoa ground and a cropped shape. Rafaella's Plus Size Paisley Print Mock Neck Long Sleeve Sweater and Tommy Hilfiger's Paisley V Neck Sweater keep the motif in knitwear.
Lauren Ralph Lauren's Paisley Cotton Modal Blend Slim Fit Sweater is navy, and Alfred Dunner's Provence Paisley Stripe Spacedye Sweater mixes stripes with the motif. Stoney Clover Lane's Large Pouch in Yellow Paisley Print is the small accessory option. I would layer one patterned piece over a solid base and borrow only one color from it for the next layer.
The history includes skilled Kashmiri weaving as well as European imitation, so I want to notice the maker and technique, not just the curl. Although the best layer is sometimes the one left open.

A pattern that keeps finding its way back
The Beatles helped bring paisley back into fashion in the 1960s, and John Lennon even painted his Rolls Royce with the pattern. That is a level of commitment I admire from a safe distance.
The lessons add up to permission to choose your scale, give the motif a clear silhouette, and let a scarf or jacket be the whole idea. I will still be drawn to the little silk square with the most tiny details, then look for a reason to wear it with everything. At least the print has a long memory.
