Rust and gray is the warm and cool pairing that looks like a fall forest floor. These five outfits mix rust-toned suede, cashmere and leather with gray flannel, fleece and wool. Keep the gray soft and the rust earthy.

Rust and Gray Outfits to Try This Fall
The Converse x A-COLD-WALL* collection that arrived on March 14, 2024 included the Gale Jacket, a reversible crinkle satin nylon piece finished in flint gray on one side and rust on the other. I like that the designers saw these as the two sides of the same coin: one cool and urban, the other warm and burnt.
Rust is orange with the volume turned down, and gray is the quietest color in a wardrobe. Put them together and the rust looks richer and the gray looks warmer, because neither is trying to take over. Black next to rust can look severe. Gray next to rust looks like stone and clay.
A quick test: lay a rust sweater over a gray coat near a window. If the orange looks deep and earthy instead of bright, and the gray stays soft, you have a pair.

Warm Leathers for a Gray Coat
This grid is the warm side, in tans and browns that sit close to rust. Proenza Schouler's Arcadia loafers are suede with shearling trim, Loewe's Flamenco Layers clutch is tan leather, Lauren Manoogian's High Arch boots are black leather and Balenciaga's Le City is a small black crinkled-leather bag with studs. Wear the loafers or the boots, not both, under a gray coat. What I would skip: gray socks with tan loafers, which cancels the warmth.

A Brown Cropped Sweater, Charcoal Flannel
Tom Ford's cropped sweater is a cashmere and silk blend in a warm brown, and Maria McManus's pants are layered wrap-effect wool flannel in charcoal with a straight leg. Chloé's Azelan boots are embroidered tan leather, and Tod's shoulder bag is medium suede in tan. How to wear it: because the sweater is cropped, a high-waisted pant is the right choice, and the tan boots tie the two halves together.
A Gray Cashmere Sweater, Tan Suede Pants
The Row's Nezana sweater is light gray cashmere, as plain as it gets and as good as it gets, and Nili Lotan's Joan pants are tan suede with a straight leg. Tod's loafers are brown leather with the logo, and Savette's Slim Symmetry Pochette is a light brown suede top-handle. Suede pants are the thing here: the texture takes the place of any print.
A Brown Silk Dress, a Gray Fleece Coat
Róhe's Camura dress is lace-trimmed shirred silk-satin in a deep brown, and Colleen Allen's high-collar coat is gray fleece, very soft and a bit sculptural. Polo Ralph Lauren's paneled ankle boots are brown leather and Toteme's tote is textured tan leather with a belt. The slip dress under a fleece coat looks unfussy and a bit unexpected. It is dinner and a coat check.
A Suede Fringe Jacket, a Dark Gray Cardigan
Nili Lotan's Eloi jacket is brown suede with fringe trim, and Stella McCartney's cardigan is a dark gray wool blend with shearling at the front. Mother's Kick It jeans are brown and high-rise, and JW Anderson's ballet flats are brown suede trimmed in ruffled nubuck. This one is a bit western, and the gray cardigan keeps the fringe from running away.
Let the Rust Stay Earthy
The one rule I follow with rust and gray is to keep the rust earthy. Terracotta, cognac and tan all look right next to a mid gray, while a neon orange makes the gray look dull. Put the gray on the biggest piece, like a coat or trousers, and the rust or tan on the shoes and bag. If you only own one of the two, start with a rust sweater, because you already own gray.
