Red and Gray Outfits to Try This Fall

Red and Gray Outfits to Try This Fall

Red and gray is what you wear when black feels too obvious. These five outfits pair red knits, flats and bags with gray wool, flannel and cashmere. Let the red be the one loud thing and keep the gray quiet.

Vogue's Spring 2024 runway color guide had a section called Red plus Gray, noting that red was having its moment and that pairing it with gray felt fresher than the usual black. It is a small observation but it is correct: gray is what black would be if it were less serious.

Gray is a neutral with a cool, quiet mood, and red is the loudest color there is. Put a gray flannel coat over a red knit and the red looks deliberate, almost graphic. With black, red can look like a uniform, and with white, it can look like a flag. Gray gives it room.

A quick test: hold a red scarf against a gray sweater near your face. If the red looks rich and the gray looks soft rather than dull, you are on the right track. If the gray looks sad, go a shade lighter.

A Red Beanie, Black Boots

Johnstons of Elgin's Bhaltair beanie is a cashmere and silk blend in red, and Carolina Herrera's ribbon-detailed belt is red wool. Ferragamo's Nyves knee boots are black leather and Liffner's bucket bag is black suede with a buckle. This grid has the red and the dark note, so you add the gray: a gray coat over everything. What I would skip: red belt and red beanie in the same outfit, which starts to look like a costume.

A Red Sweater, Gray Puppytooth

Brunello Cucinelli's sweater is ribbed cotton in red, and R13's Triple Pleat pants are brushed wool in a gray puppytooth with a very wide leg. Aeyde's ballet flats are red satin and Alaïa's Mina bag is a laser-cut red nubuck top-handle. How to wear it: the pattern on the pants is subtle enough that you can keep a plain sweater, and the red flats pick up the sweater without matching it exactly.

A Gray Hoodie, Red Slim Pants

Victoria Beckham's Lana hoodie is a stretch wool and cashmere blend in light gray, which is as comfortable as it sounds and much sharper. Carolina Herrera's slim-leg pants are red stretch wool, Jamie Haller's High Vamp flats are red leather and Isabel Marant's Bolton bag is red leather, gathered and embellished. This is the grid where the red goes on the bottom, which is a bolder way to wear it.

A Red Maxi Under a Gray Coat

Abadia's Sarah dress is a draped wool-blend maxi in red, and Another Tomorrow's coat is a cashmere flannel in dark gray. Versace's Clelia 90 slingbacks are red leather with the Medusa, and Alaïa's Le Teckel is a medium red leather shoulder bag. The dark gray coat is the ideal frame for this much red. Leave the coat open so the dress is a long line of color down the middle.

A Red Jacket, a Gray Knit, Red Jeans

Emilia Wickstead's Aelin jacket is a cropped, darted birdseye in red, and Chloé's sweater is a ruffle-trimmed wool and cashmere blend in gray. Willy Chavarria's Chente jeans are red and straight, and Zimmermann's Alchemy flats are red leather with a buckle. Three reds in one outfit is a lot, so the gray sweater is the quiet center that stops it becoming a costume.

One Loud Red, Everything Else Quiet

The rule I follow with red and gray is to let one thing be red and keep the rest quiet. A true red looks best against a mid or light gray, while a very dark charcoal makes the red look louder than you may want. Put red on the bag, shoes or scarf if you are nervous, and on a sweater or pants if you are not. If you only own one of the two, start with a red knit, because you have a gray coat already.
