Navy and gray is a quiet pairing that looks sharper than it sounds. These five outfits mix navy cashmere, denim and wool with gray knits, charcoal and suede. Let navy be the darker of the two and the gray a little warm.

Navy and Gray Outfits to Try This Fall
At her Fall 2026 show, Julie Kegels sent out what Vogue called wonky navy and gray skirts with curved thigh slits. The slit is the playful part, but I keep looking at the colors: two of the most sensible shades in a closet, cut in a way that is deliberately a little off.
Navy and gray work because they sit close in depth but lean in opposite directions, navy cool and blue, gray soft and neutral. Together they look like a suit that has been taken apart, which is a useful thing for an outfit to look like. Black and gray can go flat, and navy gives gray a reason to be there.
A quick test: lay a gray sweater over a navy coat in good daylight. If the gray looks softer and the navy looks deeper, the pairing is working. If the gray turns greenish, try a warmer one.

Gray Knits, Gray Suede
This grid is all gray, which is the easy way to start. Khaite's Lake beanie is cashmere, mohair and silk, fuzzy enough to soften a navy coat, and Lisa Yang's Enoa scarf is brushed cashmere in a similar mist gray. Amina Muaddi's Holli 70 slingbacks are light gray leather with lace trim, and Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato clutch is gray suede. Put any of it with a navy coat and you have an outfit. What I would skip: a gray bag with gray shoes in the same shade, because it flattens everything.

A Navy Bubble Knit, Gray Wide Legs
Loulou de Saison's Rolf sweater is navy cashmere in a bubble stitch, which gives a plain color a lot of texture without any pattern. James Perse's cashmere wide-leg pants are gray and fall softly, so the outfit feels like loungewear that happens to be dressed. Gianvito Rossi's New Piper 45 pumps are navy suede, and Brunello Cucinelli's reversible tote is pinstriped denim trimmed in leather and suede. How to wear it: keep the sweater loose, and let the hem sit over the waistband.
A Gray Off-Shoulder Top, Navy Wrap Pants
Tom Ford's off-the-shoulder top is gray cashmere, and it is more relaxed than it sounds, a sweater with one idea. JW Anderson's wrap pants are navy cotton drill with a wide leg and a tie at the waist, so they look interesting from the side. Khaite's Miriam 50 pumps are navy velvet, and Hunting Season's Small Soft clutch is navy leather. The mix of cashmere, drill and velvet is why a two-color outfit does not look plain.
A Navy Denim Dress Under Charcoal
Zimmermann's belted midi dress is navy denim, which makes it easy to wear all day without feeling dressed up. Guest in Residence's jacket is felted wool and cashmere in a ribbed charcoal knit, thick enough to count as a coat on a mild day. A.Emery's Griffin mules are black leather and Rue De Verneuil's Traversée tote is black canvas with leather trim, so this outfit leans darker than the others. Wear the jacket open and let the navy belt show.
A Navy Coat Over Dark Denim
Dries Van Noten's twill coat is navy wool blend, structured through the shoulder with a clean line, and it is the outer layer I would build this grid around. Extreme Cashmere's Be Classic sweater is a light gray cashmere blend, and Calvin Klein Collection's straight-leg jeans are a dark denim that sits between navy and black. Lisa Yang's brushed ribbed beanie is charcoal cashmere. Navy on navy is fine here, as long as the gray sweater sits at the neckline and breaks it up.
Let Navy Stay Darker
The rule I come back to with this pairing is to let navy stay darker than the gray. Mist, dove and heather grays look best against a deep navy, while a dark charcoal can blur into it. Put the gray close to your face and the navy on the coat, pants or skirt. If you only own one of the two, start with a gray knit, because it goes with whatever navy you already have.
