APL sneakers explained: the Zipline, the Jogger and every type in between

APL started in Los Angeles in 2009 with twin brothers Adam and Ryan Goldston, and its first basketball shoe was banned by the NBA in 2010 for giving players an unfair jump. The brand has been engineered first and beautiful second ever since. Today the range is knit TechLoom runners, easy everyday trainers and lifestyle shoes with a track attitude, and below are my eight favorites to start with.

Trending APL sneakers right now: the Wave, the Jogger, the Veil and more

These are the APL styles trending right now, based on retailer featured rankings, new arrivals and low stock, not a sales number from us. The black TechLoom Wave and Traveler are easy slip-ons, the Jogger in gum is the fresh alternative to all-white sneakers, and the Veil shows up in three colors for a reason. APL TechLoom Zipline and Breeze: the performance running sneakers

The Zipline is APL's most advanced runner, with a single-layer upper and FutureFoam cushioning, and the brand calls it its bestselling running shoe. Shark, slate and navy are the easy neutrals, fawn and almond butter are warm for fall, and the blue is the one pop of color. The Breeze is the lighter, cleaner option, and the white pair is a crisp winter sneaker.

APL TechLoom Pro, Dream, Bliss and Traveler: the everyday trainers

These are the lighter shoes I wear most. The Pro is the original lace-up, the Dream is the all-purpose pair that comes in the most shades, the Bliss is a slip-on with a strap, and the Traveler is a sleek slip-on made for airports. If you want one pair for fall and winter, start with a Dream in a neutral.

APL Jogger, Euphoria, Veil and Riviera: the lifestyle sneakers

The lifestyle shoes add shape to APL's comfort. The Jogger borrows from 90s track style and works with denim and puffers, the Euphoria is lighter and cleaner, the Veil sits between sporty and dressy, and the Riviera is the newest, a low-profile retro pair for dinner.

How I would choose your first pair of APL sneakers

Pick a Zipline or Pro if you run, a Traveler or Dream if you walk and travel, and a Jogger or Euphoria if you want a style shoe. Then choose black, grey or ivory, try them on with your real socks, and walk around before you decide.
